The Historical Society of Grand Rapids Ohio was formed in 1975 at the suggestion of Mayor James Carter, who recognized that there was a growing interest in our local history.  About thirty interested individuals met in September at the Mid Am Bank building to develop plans and the first annual meeting was held on October 26th.  Marilyn Stevens was chosen as the first President with Robert Marlow as Vice-President. They led the group for the first two years and were succeeded by June Huffman, President, Ronald Studer, Vice-President, Cleo Heising, Secretary, and Ann Laskey, Treasurer. The first Summer Musical was A Musicale, American Style, performed at the Town Hall in 1976. The entire community came together to help the Historical Society sponsor the first annual Applebutter Fest in October 1977.

To this day, citizens of the Village work hard to enhance and preserve the history of the Village.  It seems fitting that one of the purposes of the Applebutter Fest is to preserve the memories of pioneer life for it is the reminders of the past that make Grand Rapids an historic place to live and visit.

The Historical Society returns the proceeds from the Applebutter Fest to the local community.  Many local organizations fund their annual activities through participation in this event.  As costs continue to rise, it becomes a greater challenge to cover our expenses and meet our goals.

The Historical Society Board meets monthly at the Town Hall.  The membership meets annually in October, just prior to the start of the last Rhythm of the River event of the season.  A notice is sent to the membership in late August, when the annual membership drive is held.

With the support of our members and the community at large, we are able to fund the following:

  • Sponsor Applebutter Fest, Rhythm on the River, and a Summer Musical
  • Maintain the Welcome Log Cabin, Lincoln Street, Howard Park, historical markers, and town signage
  • Support other local organizations with their events, such as the Grand Rapids Arts Council’s Jazz Fest and the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce’s Rapids Rally Days and Christmas Open House
  • Provide education programs at Otsego schools and/or in community
  • Collect and preserve historical photographs, memorabilia, and oral histories

Do you wish to become a more active member in your community? Do you enjoy the annual Applebutter Fest, Rhythm on the River, or other events sponsored by us? Do you have an interest in local history and its preservation? If so, please consider becoming a member of the Historical Society of Grand Rapids Ohio!
